IF ATHEISM IS NOT A RELIGION, THEN THEISM IS NOT A RELIGION

The underlying question: Is it unconstitutional for the government
to promote "Theism," by using such phrases as, "In God we trust," and
"God bless America," and by praying to God as part of a government
function?

Note to Journalists: This is a hot subject, coming up soon
for Supreme Court attention, many think. I'm not simply
grinding some dull religious axe. These are some of the arguments
we will be hearing, I expect. Culture wars, big-time.

IF ATHEISM IS NOT A RELIGION, THEN THEISM IS NOT A RELIGION

by Bill McGinnis, Public Domain

Elsewhere, I presented the idea that Atheism is a religion, the religion
whose belief about God is that there is no God. Please see
http://essaysandcommentaries.com/thereligionofatheism.txt and also my
newsgroups post entitled "ESTABLISHING THE RELIGION OF ATHEISM."

As expected, the hard-core Atheists objected venomously, with their
typical ad hominem attacks, such as "you Moron,"(***@newscene.com), and
"how utterly full of sh*t you are," (***@bizniz.net), and "Frickin'
moron," (***@null.none).

Okay. Just for the sake of discussion, let's say that Atheism is not a
religion. What then? What is it? How would you try to define it? If it is
not a religion, then what is it? Maybe it's a philosophy! Okay . . . But
if Atheism is a philosophy, not a religion, then Theism must also be a
philosophy, not a religion, by whatever definitions of "philosophy" and
"religion" you choose to use. And if Atheism and Theism are both
philosophies, then neither is a religion, and there is no basis for
pretending that Theism is un-Constitutional.

So we see that . . .

IF ATHEISM AND THEISM ARE BOTH RELIGIONS, THEN ATHEISM AND THEISM BOTH
MUST BE SUPPRESSED IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, JUST AS CHRISTIANITY, JUDAISM, AND
ISLAM ARE SUPPRESSED. THIS MEANS YOU CANNOT TEACH THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION
AS FACT, BECAUSE THAT IS ESTABLISHING ATHEISM AS THE STATE RELIGION.

IF ATHEISM AND THEISM ARE BOTH PHILOSOPHIES, THEN NEITHER ONE IS A
RELIGION, AND THEISM CAN BE FREELY EXPRESSED: THAT IS, MENTIONING GOD IN
ANY PUBLIC PLACE IS PERFECTLY CONSTITUTIONAL, AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT TEND
TO "ESTABLISH" ANY PARTICULAR GOD-BASED RELIGION, SUCH AS CHRISTIANITY,
JUDAISM, OR ISLAM.

SO "GOD BLESS AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," AND PRAYING TO GOD IN PUBLIC
ARE ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL UNDER THE U.S. CONSTITUTION.

Blessings to you in the name of the One God, Who created all things.

The answer is that it is unconsititutional because it endorses
one, or a category, of religious beliefs over other religious
beliefs.

Are Buddhists and Hindus accepted as US Americans?
If so then "In God we trust" is not true for all US Americans.
It is certainly no more true than "In Vishnu we trust".

If we allow "In God we trust" to be printed on the currency
then "In Vishnu we trust" should be printed on the currency.

If you argue that the majority of Americans are Christian
then I will argue that the proportion of bill printed

How about a judgement on religion.
I wouldn't call it a judgment per se. I prefer to call it a position
of doubt, a refusal to share someone's subjectively-inspired
affirmations about gods.

From Merriam-Webster Online:
------------------------------------------------
Main Entry: athe·ism
Pronunciation: 'A-thE-"i-z&m
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French athéisme, from athée atheist, from Greek atheos
godless, from a- + theos god
Date: 1546
1 archaic : UNGODLINESS, WICKEDNESS
2 a : a disbelief in the existence of deity b : the doctrine that there is
no deity
-------------------------------------------------

So according to the dictionary it is basically a disbelief
or a doctrine.
When I look up 'doctrine' I see multiple things including
basically 'belief'.
Disbelief? Belief? Almost but not quite the same difference. ;)

I have no problem calling atheism a belief even though
many of my fellow atheists would object.
I would say it is a belief in our reason, belief in the
observable, belief in the repeatable, belief in the verifiable,
belief in nature.

Labeling things was probably the one of the earliest steps
that humans took in developing real language.
Conveying ideas is cumbersome if not impossible

Yes, because those statements are, by both historical and contemporary
context, Christian. Even if you don't accept that, they are certainly
monotheistic and therefore not simply theism but a sub-section of it.

On 30 Nov 2003, Bill McGinnis <***@adams.patriot.net> screwed up his
face, groaned, pushed hard, and farted out the following message in news:***@corp.supernews.com:

<snip bullshit>

It's a very convenient (for theists, that is) claim to make, that
atheism is a religion. It's convenient in the sense that if both theism
and atheism are a religion, then since theism and atheism are mutually
exclusive, and since the two together comprise the set of all of
humanity, it because impossible to have any kind of separation of church
and state whatsoever. Thus, using sufficiently weaselly arguments, the
theists who make this claim can invalidate the separation clause in the
constitution and open the door for a full-blown theocracy.

However, that doesn't address the question of why atheism is not a
religion.

Well, is bald a hair color? You used the example of black being a
color, and I'll grant you that black is a hair color, in the sense that
we commonly use it. However, if there is no hair to be colored, can the
lack of hair be considered a color?

Or, let me put it this way: If there were no religions on Earth at all,
what would be the difference between humanity in such a case and
atheists? And what would you call a person who has no religion? Would
you say that everyone has a religion whether they like it or not?

'If', by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

IF ATHEISM IS NOT A RELIGION, THEN THEISM IS NOT A RELIGION

Post by Bill McGinnis
Okay. Just for the sake of discussion, let's say that Atheism is not a
religion. What then? What is it? How would you try to define it? If it
is not a religion, then what is it?...
[Tripe-snipper in effect]

Let me put it to you this way:

IF THE SAHARA IS NOT AN OCEAN, THEN THE ATLANTIC IS NOT AN OCEAN

Does this make sense to you? Of course not, and neither does your
flawed assertion. Atheism is quite simply the _lack_ of a belief in a
supreme deity. It's like baldness is a _lack_ of hair, as opposed to
being just another variation of hair.

Allow me to help you further by highlighting that an atheist *MAY* be
religious, providing that the religion does not involve a belief in a
supreme deity (i.e., a God or gods), but this belief would be
completely separate from, and unrelated to atheism. This fact is true
because the definition of an atheist, as can be confirmed by virtually
any dictionary, is someone who does not believe (i.e., lacks belief)
in, or disbelieves (i.e., lacks belief in, or believes the opposite to
be true) in supreme deities.

An example of the religions to which I allude is Wicca, a religious
practice involving nature-worship and witchcraft. Note that
"witchcraft", according to Wiccans and dictionaries in the know, is
the art of exercising "magical powers" rather than the Christian
misunderstanding that it involves Satan-worshiping.

I sincerely hope this has shed some light on your understanding of
atheism.

Take-aways for the day:

1. Atheism is not a religion

2. Atheism is the lack of a belief, or a disbelief in a supreme
deity.

3. Atheists may also be religious, providing they comply with
Point #2.

To make your statement accurate, we should revise it to read: "*SOME*
atheists deny the existence of a supreme deity, while others simply do
not subscribe to the belief in a supreme deity."

Your statement, as it is, is as accurate as the assertion "theists
believe in the Judeo/Christian God." This statement, as yours, is
simply too narrow to be accurate for the entire identified group.

Atheism is quite simply the _lack_ of a belief in a
supreme deity.
Get real. Atheism is the Faith Belief that no Supreme Diety exists.
Atheists DENY the existence of God.
Wrong and wrong. If I were you, I'd stick to something that you actually have
some knowledge on. You're making yourself look stupider by the second.

So, you deny the existence of Thor? Or is it possible you just don't
believe in him as anything other than a mythological figure? Don't be
disingenous, now.

Elsewhere, I presented the idea that Atheism is a religion, the religion
whose belief about God is that there is no God. Please see

If you spend just a little time lurking on alt.atheism, you will
see many people who call themselves atheists and deny having such
a belief. If you examine a lot of dictionaries, you will find
several differing definitions offered, some will agree with your
use of the word, some with ours.

If you cling to your use of the word, you will find it next to
impossible to understand us. I don't know if that matters to you.

God "doesn't exist". It is a religious belief because it has to do with
God, and it is a faith belief because it is not based on any scientific
evidence of any kind whatsoever.
WRONG - Who are you to tell atheist what they believe? Talk about arrogance.
Atheists believe in the Truth, although they refuse to name the Truth
to be the Truth or God.
Atheists believe in lots of true things, none of which are God.

No, I claim the Truth to be God. I'm only a believer.

WRONG - Who are you to tell atheist what they believe? Talk about arrogance.
Atheists believe in the Truth, although they refuse to name the Truth
to be the Truth or God.
Atheists believe in lots of true things, none of which are God.
But God is not a "thing".
"not thing" == "nothing". Eric, I didn't know you were an atheist. All
this time I thought you were a brain-damaged xian.
If God is "nothing", God is nothing you can imagine.
If god is nothing, then god is nothing. And nothing is *exactly* what I
imagine it to be.
Well, no matter what you imagine, you can not imagine God.

If the newsgroup were to have a motto, I think you have just expressed it

But what really bugs me is the sheer, arrogant nastiness of people who
think they get to tell us what our position "really" is. It should be
obvious even to them that there is major disagreement between us about
this - and that we are the final arbiters of what our position
actually is. Yet they see nothing wrong with trying to "prove" we're
perjuring ourselves, which is tantamount to telling us we're lying
about it. Which is incredibly nasty.

But it makes them feel secure...

God, and it is a faith belief because it is not based on any scientific
evidence of any kind whatsoever.
Why are so many of you Christians such in-the-face nasty liars?
Q: What's the difference between a Christian Fundamentalist and
a used car salesman?
A: The used car salesman _knows_ when he's lying to you.

Gee, it sounds like it is terribly frustrating to be counted among the good
Atheist faithful these days.....
Since some in this thread who claim to be "Atheist" insist that the Atheist
Faith does NOT mean they believe God "doesn't exist", perhaps you should
think about praying and asking God to take away the misery and frustration
you feel as an Atheist? Maybe He can help reduce your misery?
In the incredibly unlikely event that he exists, he has alreaday done
that. In fact we are not at all miserable in the face of your lies
about us, just annoyed - and annoyance passes.

After all, we are not the one who is too full of shame to keep the same
name for more than 5 minutes.

I don't think it is conclusive, but the headers of BW and
DeanUltraLeftist are certainly very similar.

I was too lazy to rule out that possibility. I guess it could still
be said that they shared a brain if they were all the same person.

Yes he is. What makes you imagine that you get to tell us what our
point of view "really" is? Do you have any idea just how arrogantly
nasty that is?

Are you really so stupid you don't realise that it's merely somebody
else's irrelevant religious belief that we wouldn't give a flying fuck
about if they didn't push it where it is neither wanted nor needed,
and if it didn't motivate them to lie about us?

We have an infestation of sock puppets:

BW
DeanUltraLeftist
Low_IQ_Dems
EasilyManipulatedDems
DemoDeath

They all have this in their headers:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165
NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.91.21.35
X-Complaints-To: ***@comcast.net
Organization: Comcast Online

If they follow the usual pattern, the name he/she/it uses will
change regularly. Trolls who do this never have anything
intelligent to say, never listen to what is said to them. In a
little while, almost everyone here will be able to spot any of
the trolls posts within a few seconds - and shortly after that
they will get bored and wander off.
